Rock Garden Great Room Shades

I made three shades in 2002 for my great room. They are mounted on the horizontal window trim between the upper and lower windows. I used my PhotoView technique which involves taking a photograph of a scene, pulling it into a simple drawing program and breaking the picture into straight lines. I use CorelDraw, but any program will work, even tracing paper.

I spent an entire summer taking photographs up in the mountains to find an appropriate scene for these shades. Since it would span three windows, I wanted a panoramic view that was pleasing and colorful. I never was satisfied with any of my photos. One day I was standing in the room admiring the actual view out those windows when I had the “ah ha” moment. I already had the perfect picture. I gathered up my camera, went into the backyard and snapped perfect photographs for my shades.

This is the second set of shades for these windows. The original ones were made in 1999 and featured in an article in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine in November of that year. As you can see from the picture, I was still in my log cabin phase. I thought they were quite sophisticated at the time. Now I look at that photograph and am glad I continued to progress with my quilting skills.
