Rust Four-Diamond Shade

Room Design by Lynn Shannon, Denver, Colorado. This large shade measures 95" wide by 46" long. It brightens up a home office. The homeowner did not want to cover up the beautiful alder trim on the windows, so we went with an inside-mount shade. He also expressed the need for only one shade rather than three on this large window. Due to the wide expanse we came up with a very simple pieced pattern that mimicked the three windows.

When the shades are down, the cranberry fabric contrastly nicely with the window trim. By using a batik fabric, which is handpainted, you get a textured feeling. The center diamonds break up the large rectangles, but are a subtle design that goes with the Arts and Crafts style of the house.
One of the drawbacks of an inside-mount shade is that part of the glass is covered when the shade is raised. In this case, we only covered up the view of the roof eave. None of the view of the beautiful landscape was obscured. I love the way this shade looks when it is pulled up. The center bands of light fabric tie in so well with the window trim.

The shade was made from only three fabrics: the background cranberry batik, a tan batik that was used in the diamonds and as the borders, and finally a sage green for the points of the diamonds. (You can purchase directions for this simple diamond pattern in our Online Store. The four-diamond design is often used on the border of quilts.) The sage green fabric was also used as a 1/4-inch contrasting border around the cranberry panels. |
