Plan Mock-Roman Shade Valance

TwoFlapMockRoman.jpg
A Mock-Roman Shade is a cross between a Window Valance and a Roman shade. It is also called a Faux Roman shade or a Stationary Roman shade. It looks like a fully raised fabric blind, but does not operate. These instructions are for a Mock-Roman shade with two stationary "flaps". This gives a nice full look with the minimum of fabric. You will fix the two flaps so that an inch of fabric shows below the bottom flap and also between the first and second folds.
Decide upon an Inside-Mount or an Outside-Mount Mock-Roman Valance. On a bare window, you can use either an inside or outside mount. However, if there is an existing window treatment, you will usually use an outside, projected mount. If you need a board that projects further than a 1x2, you can use a standard 1x3 (which usually measures 3/4" x 2 3/4"). Another standard board size that you can use is a 1x6 (usually 3/4" by 5 1/5"). If you want another projection depth, a full-service lumber store will "rip" a 1x6 down to a smaller size for a nominal fee.

Your Mock-Roman Valance is made the same regardless of how you mount the board. Note that this is different from a Flat Valance, which wraps around the edges of the board for a projected mount. Since the Mock-Roman valance folds up, it cannot wrap around the board. The "shade" stacks back away from the front of the board so it looks just fine with a projected mount.

Let's talk terminology. Normally I would only talk about Finished Length and Finished Width of a Valance. For a Mock Roman, we will also talk about Stackage, which is the folded lenght of the Valance.

A Flat Valance is a simple lined fabric panel. By convention, the vertical dimension is the length and the horizontal dimension is the width. A Mock Roman Valance looks like a raised blind. You are interested in the Stackage, since this becomes the length of the Valance. If you unfold a Mock Roman Valance, it looks like a short Roman shade. You will be making a shade this size.

Decide on the Stackage (final folded length) for your Mock-Roman Valance. Now use the Table below to determine the Finished Length of your Un-Folded Mock-Roman. All dimensions are in inches..
