My favorite rings are the white or beige plastic. They will not become brittle and break from sun exposure, will not melt even if touched by a hot iron and have high abrasion resistance.

The brass-plated metal lift rings are appropriate when the BACK of your shade is colored (not white or beige). They are very small, but also very strong. The small size means they will be barely visible when the shade is viewed from the back. Remember that only one lift cord goes through each lift ring, so small is fine.

The clear lift ring is a new item. They are very hard to find. A customer found a source, which she shared with me. Since it is not one of my normal suppliers, I have the feeling it is not intended for window treatment use. I don't know the long-term effect of using it. I do have a sample taped up in a south-facing window, but it will be several years before I can assure you the rings won't crack. So why would you want this lift ring? I tested them out on sheer shades, and frankly, they showed through just about as much as the white lift rings, which wasn't much. I can see using them if you are really concerned about seeing the lift rings from the outside of the house.

A Comment on Lift RingTape
I am often asked why I don't sell lift ring tape. This is a twill tape with rings already sewn on. Many readers think that this will save them time. I personally don't like the stuff. I have experimented with it, but have never used it on a Roman shade (I ripped it off a shade because I wasn't happy with the results). What I DON'T like:

·         Your fold depth is determined by the spacing of the rings on the tape, not by what would look best for your own window. That means you can’t really control the Stackage, nor can you use our Hardware Calculator, unless you are very clever.

·         The spacing of the lift rings are quite close together. A 5” spacing means that your fold depth will be 2.5”.  A 6” spacing means that your fold depth will be 3”.

·         You have to carefully mark vertical lines on your shade and sew both sides of the tape onto your fabric. I found this to be very difficult. I couldn’t seem to properly adjust the tension on the sewing machine. I ended up with puckers in my shade. It actually looked like I had gathered it along the tape!
