Kitchen Art Shades
Copyright 2006 - Dorene Cohen, Austin, Texas

Dorene Cohen was the Program Committee in 2006 for the Chisholm Trail Quilters Guild that is located in Round Rock, Texas. I presented a program and taught a workshop there in June, 2006. After the class, I spent a few days in Austin visiting our new granddaughter. As I always do, I was checking e-mail messages several times a day. Dorene was keeping the internet hot with photographs of her shades-in-progress!

She decided the day of the workshop that she would replace the blinds in her dining room with pieced Roman shades. The photograph at the left shows the windows with the "old" window treatments in place.  The day after the class I received the photograph below from Dorene. She had made quite the progress, but I was concerned about the size of her shades as she stated that she just needed to add borders and would have 5 rows and 5 folds. If you have read any of the instructions, you will remember that a Roman shade must have an even number of folds. Now I was worried. A telephone discussion ensued where I tried to convince Dorene to add another row of blocks at the top or the bottom before attaching the blue top and bottom borders. She refused since she has already perfectly finished the design with setting and corner triangles!

So we explored other options, such as stripes. "I'm really good at stripes" answered Dorene. The next day (this women is fast) I received the following photograph:

I can't wait to see Dorene's future projects. She has a great sense of color, is quick to adapt and "jumps right in".
