How To Mount a Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shade

These instructions assume that you will are using pulleys and cord cleats on your headrail. If you are using screw eyes instead of pulleys, simply replace the word pulley with screw eye. You will still need a separate small screw eye at each end so that the knotted cords don't pull through. See the additional instructions if you are using cord locks.

These instructions also assume that you will have the Top-Down controls on the left-hand side of the shade, and the Bottom-Up controls on the right-hand side of the shade. You don't have to do that, but if you reverse the cord locations, it's up to you to reverse left and right in the instructions below. You ALWAYS have the Top-Down pulleys on the FRONT of the headrail and the Bottom-Up pulleys on the BACK of the headrail.

Step 1. Attach Headrail to wall or window trim and install Cord Cleats. Mark the position of the top of the entire Top-Down/Bottom-Up shade system. Attach the headrail to the wall or window trim. Attach a cord cleat on each side of the window. Use a level to make sure that the mounting board is installed on the horizontal.

Step 2. String Top-Down lift cords. The Top-Down lift cords are tied to the top lift rings. They will be threaded through the FRONT pulleys. Melt the ends of the lift cords. Thread the cords through the front pulleys and the small screw eye. All cords will go directly up to the pulley it lines up with on the headrail, entering the pulley from the right-hand side and exiting the left-hand side. Each cord is then threaded through the remaining FRONT pulleys on the headrail and finally through the small left-hand screw eye.

Pull shade part way up and hold in place by wrapping the cords around the cord cleat on the left-hand side of the window.

Step 3. String Bottom-Up lift cords. The Bottom-Up lift cords pass through the columns of lift rings sewn on every other batten on the back of the shade. They will then pass through the ring on the bottom edge of the Top Border. They will be threaded through the BACK pulleys. Melt the ends of the lift cords. Thread the cords through the back pulleys and the small screw eye. All cords will go directly up to the pulley it lines up with on the headrail, entering the pulley from the left-hand side and exiting the right-hand side. Each cord is then threaded through the remaining BACK pulleys on the headrail and finally through the small on the right-hand screw eye. Pull each cord all the way through the pulleys and hold in place by wrapping the cords around the cord cleat on the right-hand side of the window or loosely knotting just outside the pulleys.

Step 5. Level Top of Shade. Un-cleat the Top-Down lift cords on the left-hand side of the shade. Pull the shade all the way up to the top, which is to the bottom of the pulleys. Separate the lift cords and pull on each one separately until each part of the shade top touches its pulley. Holding all of the cords, carefully wrap them around the cord cleat.

Step 6. Complete Bottom-Up Function Un-cleat the Bottom-Up lift cords on the right-hand side of the shade. Separate the lift cords and gently pull on each one separately, making sure that you have the same tension on each cord. Carefully knot all cords at the top of the shade, just outside of the small screw eye. Your knot has to be large enough so that it cannot pass back through the screw eye

In the photographs just above, the knot shown on the left stops below the screw eye. I made a second knot and ended up with the double knot shown on the right. (Okay, I forgot to whip stitch the pocket closed. You can see the edge of the Stiffener Board!)

These directions are meant for you to print out and make your own shades. My intention in posting them here for anyone to see and use is two-fold:
I no longer have to answer the same questions over and over again.
I am hoping that when you make your shades, you will order some or all of the hardware and supplies from me.

There is, of course, no way that I can guarantee that you purchase anything from me. However, there is one thing you should NOT do. That is, modify and claim these directions as your own.
