Windows
with a View – Turn your favorite quilt patterns into
pieced Roman shades 1 hour
Pieced Roman shades let you
showcase your quilting talents in an unusual, yet practical, way. Fabric artist
Terrell Sundermann has perfected a method of combining the pieced-fabric front
of a quilt with a Roman shade and called it a Window Hanging.
This presentation takes the
audience on the journey from Terrell’s beginning designs using traditional
quilt patterns to her latest “windows with a view” that use watercolor and
pictorial techniques. Sharing her successes, as well as her failures,
Terrell’s journey as a fabric artist parallels that of many other quilters,
except that she displays her art on a window, rather than a bed or a wall. You
will be inspired by numerous slides of beautiful shades as well as many actual
samples. What quickly becomes apparent from Terrell’s work is that these are not
Window Quilts or Warm Windows. Rather, the emphasis for these shades is on art.
Terrell’s educational background is in physics and she has modified the
already simple Roman shade to achieve a flawless lifting method using commonly
available hardware. All of the hardware will be shown and the construction steps
discussed. The audience will see that even a beginning quilter can turn fabric
into a stunning Window Hanging.
Terrell has been designing and making Window
Hangings since 1993. Now living in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, her work has
been featured in show homes in Colorado and Massachusetts and is installed in
homes throughout the United States. She has been featured in Sunset Magazine,
Better Homes & Garden’s Window & Wall Ideas, Colorado Homes &
Lifestyles, The Rocky Mountain News Spotlight Magazine and The Boston
Globe Magazine. Her unusual way of displaying quilts has been written up in Quilters’
Newsletter Magazine and The American Quilter magazine. Terrell also
wrote a book giving step-by-step instructions for making a Window Hanging.
“Pieced Roman Shades – Turn Your Favorite Quilt Patterns into Window
Hangings” is available from C&T Publishing and at local quilt shops.
Comments from Students
I want to thank you for the class you held in Colorado Springs. I really
enjoyed it. You are a great teacher. You really truly want people to make pieced
Roman shades. You also do not sabotage your pupils - but offer all the information
and tips you have learned. I have now completed two shades!
Kathleen M., Colorado Springs, CO
Thank you so much for coming to Kaw Valley Quilters Guild and sharing your
talents. Your presentations were wonderful! I enjoy my shade every day at work
and have received many compliments and questions.
