Stringing a Cord Lock Pulley

Cord Shredding by a Cord Lock Pulley

Use our Hardware Calculator to determine the number of Cord Lock Pulleys required for your Classic Roman shade, Top-Down/Bottom-Up shade or Top-Down Only Roman shade.

Free instructions on how to make your own Roman shade are available in the How To Section.

Be sure to read the comments on lift cord shredding when using a Cord Lock Pulley.

Cord Lock Pulley for Roman Shade Mounting Board [Item CLP]
These high-quality Cord Lock Pulleys are the very best available. They operate using a simple mechanism of one smooth plastic roller bar and one toothed metal roller bar. The cords are threaded so that they run between the two rollers. Swinging the cords in one direction locks the cords, swinging in the other direction unlocks the cords. A Cord Lock Pulley is attached to the wood headrail using two screws, which are supplied with the pulleys. If you use a cord lock, you do not have to use a cord cleat.

Size: 2" wide, 1.5" long and 0.75" deep. Maximum weight of shade: 90 pounds. It is highly recommended that you use a tandem pulley with larger/heavier shades.

Cord Lock Pulleys are available in two sizes. The locks are identical in operation. The difference is in the number of lift cord "guides". When you order a cord lock, an "Option" drop-down menu appears asking if you want the "5-Slots" (on the left in the photograph at the top of this page) or the "3-Slots" (on the right in the photograph at the top of this page) variety.

Moving the cords towards the center of the shade ALWAYS unlocks the mechanism. Moving the cords away from the center of the shade ALWAYS locks the mechanism.

  5-Slots, 4-Guide Wires  3-Slots, 2-Guide Wires
0.9 mm lift cord
(use this cord for Top-Down shades only)

9 lift cords maximum
Don't use the outside slots (cord might catch). 1, 2 or 3 cords in each "inside" slot

Not recommended since you can't use the outside slots (cord might catch).
1.4 mm lift cord

10 lift cords maximum
Okay to use the outside slots, 1 or 2 cords in each slot.
6 lift cords maximum
Okay to use the outside slots, 1 or 2 cords in each slot.
1.8 mm lift cord  5 lift cords maximum
Okay to use the outside slots, 1 cord in each slot.
6 lift cords maximum
Okay to use the outside slots, 1 or 2 cords in each slot.

While the above Table lists the maximum number of cords and possibilities, I would recommend the following:

If you are using 0.9 mm lift cord (which you should ONLY be using if you are making a Top-Down shade), 5-Slots Cord Lock

If you are using 1.4 mm lift cord: 5-Slots Cord Lock, and thread the cord through the "inside" slots first.

If you are using 1.8 mm lift cord: 3-Slots Cord Lock.

Notice that I would only use the 3-Slots Cord Lock if I were using 1.8 mm lift cord.
